The shot put is a simple event in which the athlete propels a shot put as far as possible using a putting action. For those new to the event, there are specific rules that need to be followed. The National Federation for High Schools is the governing body for high school track and field that makes the rules for high school track and field events. If you are a competitor or coach you should definitely be aware of the rules, but even parents and spectators should have a general knowledge of the rules in order to understand the event.
The rules for the shot put can basically be broken down into three categories:
- Facilities and Equipment
- Uniform
- In the Circle
Facilities and Equipment
The basic facilities and equipment needed for a shot put competition are a circle, a landing sector, and a shot put. The circle and landing sector are now standard for all levels of competition. The circle should be 7 feet in diameter with a 4 inch toeboard. The landing sector should be 34.92 degrees. The weight of the high school shot is 12 pounds for boys, and 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds) for girls.
Uniform
High school rules have very strict rules in place for what is permissible for athletes to wear while in competition. The uniform should be school issued. Any sweatshirt (lưới bảo vệ ban công) visible underneath the uniform should be a solid color. No visible jewelry is allowed. In particular to shot putters, no tape or glove is allowed on the hand. Taping of the wrist or using a wrist wrap is permissible. Athletes are permitted to use chalk, rosin, or a support belt if desired.
In the Circle
Once the athlete is called up, he has 60 seconds to complete his attempt. The athlete may enter the circle from any point. Once in the circle the athlete must pause, and then may initiate the attempt. For the attempt to be marked, the implement needs to land inside the landing sector, and the athlete needs to exit the back half of the circle under control after the implement has landed. At no point during the attempt is the athlete permitted to touch the top, or outside of the throwing circle or toeboard. The athlete is allowed to touch the inside rim of a raised circle, as well as the inside of the toeboard.
Occasionally an athlete may enter the circle and has forgotten his implement, or has not yet taken off his warmup new york yankees t shirt or pants. The athlete is allowed to leave the circle, or take off a warmup and throw it out of the circle without being penalized, as long as it does not occur during the attempt. The shot should be thrown with one hand using a putting action. Therefore, the shot put is not allowed to drop behind or below the shoulder. The throw is measured to the nearest 1/4 inch from the inside of the toeboard to the closest landing point of the shot put.
